The Great Grey Whale Migration in Baja
The migration of the Grey whale is one of the most dramatic and beautiful sights that you can see. About 2,000 grey whales travel every year from their feeding grounds in the Bering Sea to calving waters in Baja California. This long journey generally begins in mid-January and lasts until mid-March. One special place on the Pacific coast is Magdalena Bay, spanning 2.5 million hectors and protected under the largest wildlife Biosphere Reserve in Latin America. This marine sanctuary is home to the famous grey whales migration as well as other wildlife above and below the water including pelicans and frigates, sea lions, dolphins and marlins.

This expedition is not scuba diving, or in-water based. In Mexico, whales are a protected species, and we are not permitted to swim with them under any circumstances. There are no age restrictions, and no prior experience or certifications are required to participate in this expedition. Except for walking through the mangroves and sand dunes, all of the action takes place on the pangas. To preserve the natural behaviors of these animals, we take small local pangas with as little disturbance on the water as possible. Photographers who intend to bring drones or large camera equipment, please contact us ahead of time for tips and advice.
Planning Your Visit

Our expeditions starts and ends at our Dive Ninja headquarters located in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The closest airport is San Jose del Cabo International Airport (SJD). Another option is to fly into La Paz International Airport (LAP) and you can request to be picked up there or in town on our way to Bahia Magdalena. Both airports are served by domestic and international flights on a daily basis. Incase of any travel delays, we suggest arriving a day early as well as to get yourself settled in ahead of time.
Flights from the US are rather affordable especially coming from the west coast. Flights from Europe are reasonably priced and typically include a stopover in the US or Mexico City. If transiting through the US or any other countries, make sure ahead of time you have the appropriate transit VISA.

While you’re in town, why not explore other things to do before and after the expedition? We at Dive Ninjas have numerous options for local diving and activities in Los Cabos and the surrounding areas. From ocean safaris and pelagic encounters along the Sea of Cortez, to swimming with whale sharks and sea lions in La Paz, to scuba diving and freediving courses, there’s a lot more that Baja has to offer. Send us a message and we’d love to help arrange an add-on package with the best deals for your visit!
