Gentle Giants Expedition

The Mexican Peninsula of Baja California is one of the richest marine habitats in the world, providing refuge for a variety of marine mammals. Every winter thousands of whales migrate along the coast and travel down to warmer waters to breed, feed, and mate. In this season, we have a short period (Feb-March) where the humpback whales, grey whales and blue whales overlap allowing us to run unique expeditions and enjoy the presence of all three species. This is an expedition for everyone, whether you’re a diver or non-diver. You’ll be able to see whales in their own habitat, learn about them and their explore beautiful water world and experience all of the majesty of these amazing creatures up close!

Our gentle giants expeditions begins at our ninja home base in Cabo San Lucas—a favourite destination for humpback whales in the winter. Known for their acrobatics, these giants can be spotted rolling their massive bodies out of the ocean, fluke slapping and breaching for hours on end. There’s a good chance we’ll see males showing off for females as they search for mates as well as mothers teaching their newborn calves how to breach, dive and swim. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

As you arrive at Magdalena Bay and begin to explore this incredible ocean community, you’re sure to encounter an abundance of marine life! Here, you can catch a glimpse of the mighty grey whale and possibly even get up close and personal with these majestic creatures. This area hosts the largest aggregation of any whale in Baja; its warm and shallow waters providing a sanctuary for whales to give birth, raise young and then return again still further north to feed. At the end of the tour, we’ll pass by the sand dunes, home to our local population of coyotes. From there, we’ll cruise the beautiful mangroves that make this area such a hot spot for animal life.

What a sight the blue whale is, the largest animal to ever live on this earth growing up to 25 meters long and weighing more than 200 tonnes! Every winter these gentle giants migrate to the waters around Loreto in search of krill giving us an incredible opportunity to see them. They are a delight to watch as they feed and socialize, especially from as close as possible. Other marine mammals sightings include fin and minke whales as well as super pods of dolphins and more.

Your expedition wouldn’t be complete without a visit to swim & snorkel with the largest fish in the world – the whale shark!  The whale shark is the largest fish in the world, weighing up to 40 tons and growing to a length of 40 feet. They are filter feeders, meaning they swim with their mouths open to filter small sea animals from the sea. If we are lucky, we can see them standing completely vertical in the water suction feeding on plankton blooms. Despite their size and their name, whale sharks have a gentle nature and move through the water with beauty and grace, making it easy for snorkelers to get up close to them. You’ll follow these gentle giants with a professional guide, swimming among them in a protected area. If time permits, we’ll pay a visit to La Paz’s local sea lion colony–the California sea lions–known for all sorts of playful antics!
